The newly opened "Shooting Gallery" at 839 Larkin Street, is proud to present San Francisco based artists Yuri Psinakis and Christopher Jernberg and their two-man show:
beauty commerce adaptation
The show consists of an exciting variety of mediums such as mixed media, photography, oil paintings, video installation and stills, sculpture, and more.
Swedish born Christopher Jernberg continues aligning his personality with his self and in turn with culture and nature. Riding many horses, his personal work is done a lot quicker, one painting a day, (Picasso pace) and with the attention focused on satisfying his essential needs through art in the most natural and efficient way. "My new paintings give me access to what I want right away. It’s not like in what’s reffered to as reality, where there is a constant battle of will between people, morals and science. In my fantasy world I push the buttons". Jernberg believes that the excitement he experiences while making the art will transfer to the viewer if he or she opens to it. He contrasts his one day paintings with a 16x12 portrait (Annemarie, 2003) of his girlfriend that took him forty days to finish. "I went through hell painting that portrait and it is no different than my other work except the way I felt while doing it; the same hands, the same consciousness made it, but most of the time people don’t want to take you seriously unless you suffer, so I priced it accordingly." Inspired by the pricing of the paintings in Eric Fischl’s show at Mary Robbins in New York (March 8 –April 26, 2003), Jernberg offers his "Annemarie" to the public at a delicate $550,000. "It’s no joke, my intention is to make that kind of money, so why not just start visualizing it right-off." Jernberg’s one day paintings are priced slightly lower, to allow the rest of us to participate. "I like first class," he says, "and I like IKEA."
Yuri Psinakis, son of Greek parents, was born in the Philippines in 1967. He grew up watching a lot of TV, (like most of us) and decided at some point to start editing out the unessential and perhaps help us appreciate the hidden gems that pass by our retinas at a millisecond. His work goes through generations; TV – Polaroid – smaller or larger prints under thick glass or no glass. Yuri says "Being bombarded by imagery/manipulated psychology our television: a product pushing products to enhance our lives at our own expense and for others immediate benefit… I want to find what’s beautiful in that. I want to take a moment and make it still… to have… and to hold… to show… to make available to others; something beautiful." Psinakis’ images light up the sky; his rearrangements are ultramarine blue, cerulean and orange, the primaries, secondaries, pushing our buttons. He pushes the pause button, the shutter button, the image seemingly freezes, but no one , no-thing is ever the same, the story continues from Yuri’s selection to our neuro-associations, epistemology, metaphysics and imagination.
