For Immediate Release:
Shooting Gallery Project Space Presents:
Drunk on the Moon
New Works from Joshua Petker
Shooting Gallery Project Space is pleased to present Drunk on the Moon by Joshua Petker. Join us for the opening reception Saturday, March 9, from 7-11pm. The exhibit will be free and open to the public for viewing through April 6, 2024.
Drunk on the Moon will consist of six paintings, ranging in size from 12×12” to 36×36”, all incredibly bright and awash with color. Citing universal themes of the human condition such as love, optimism, rejection, and mortality as inspiration, Petker creates work with an easy appeal.
From the Artist:
My paintings are a process of layering: what starts out as obvious representational imagery becomes finessed into a reconstructed mess, leaving only a record of the undefined and a recapitulation of the human attempt at finding peace through process. My work combines my personal failures, human history, philosophy, romance, and tragedy all while eulogizing the unanswerable adventure: man’s search for meaning. My paintings straddle the modes of representation and abstraction, with layers of contrasting visual references, from historical portraiture, to abstract landscapes, to familiar philosophical representations like boats, the ocean, and chairs, all which allow the work to strike a balance between irony and introspection.
Joshua Petker was born in Los Angeles, CA in 1979 and received a BA from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. After studying abroad in 2024 at the Lorenzo de’Medici Institute of Florence, he decided to pursue a career as a fine artist upon completion of his studies back in the U.S. His work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally and can be found in private collections around the world.

Charmaine Olivia‘s solo show Muses in the Shooting Gallery has garnered much well deserved excitement. The website Art Attacks!‘ recently posted photos from the Shooting Gallery’s grand opening featuring the artist here. In the new pieces, Olivia blends the intersection between abstraction and portraiture, with “wildly free strokes [that] translate a dreamy, empyrean energy.” Muses will be showing through the end of today, so if you missed the big opening party make sure to stop by before 7pm!

“I am interested in vastness and human navigation of this vastness.”- Joshua Petker
We’re excited to have Joshua Petker come back and show in Shooting Gallery‘s new Project Space. Petker’s show Drunk on the Moon will open March 9 and run until April 6, 2024.
This Is So Contemporary posted this interview with the artist last year. In it Petker discusses how his studies in Florence, the city of art, affected his work, “Living in Florence awoke my passion for making art. It must have been the combination of learning how much I loved making art and being in such a historic and inspirational place that motivated me to pursue a new direction in my life.” Petker describes past inspiration taken from decorative artists of the 19th century, and looking to James Ensor for influence with his show Adrift.
The artist also discusses how he is increasingly venturing into abstraction, and how techniques from traditional graffiti, such as the direct and unmixed application of color, have influenced his work on canvas. Petker strives to explore both ends of the sublime/grotesque dichotomy, and we’re looking forward to seeing how that unfolds in his work for Drunk on the Moon.

Photographer James Pawlish from Juxtapoz Magazine was one of many who chose to spend their Saturday celebrating our grand opening last Saturday (and we can’t thank you all enough). Mosey on over here to view all the photos!

Cape Town artist Faith47 paired up with director and videographer Makhulu, presenting “Living Apart. Entwined.” The beautiful piece was done on the corner of Williams and Sussex Street, Woodstock in Cape Town. Recently, this particular part of Cape Town has seen many changes and affects due to gentrification projects. Combining her talents with animator Inka Kendzia with music from Gary Morris, this skillful team captures a striking and thought-provoking visual.
If you want to check out some of her other recent work, Vandalog provides photos and a video featuring her latest show, “Fragments of a Burnt History.” It is without a doubt that Faith47 has an amazing ability to convey artistic commentary. With that, we’re excited to announce that she’ll be joining us for our 10 Year Anniversary Group Show on March 9th, 2024. Shooting Gallery will be hosting this show together at our spacious new space at 886 Geary Street. I’m sure we are all exciting to see what she’s going to bring to the party! Save the date!

Here is the latest interview from Charmaine Olivia, whose solo show Muses, was unveiled last Saturday during Shooting Gallery and White Walls grand opening in their new building on 886 Geary Street. Olivia’s new work embraces a wildly radiant palette in ethereal compositions of windswept maidens. Each title evokes a mythos from various cultures such as a nordic Freja and the Greek Halcyon. In Jennifer Lewis’ interview in Sex & Design, the artist relates that her figures are a hybrid of individuals who inspire her as well as self-portraits. Charmaine discusses how she first discovered painting, that women posing with skulls are not necessarily dark, and why many artists like to procrastinate before shows.

Derek Macario of SF Station stopped by the grand opening of the new home to Shooting Gallery at 886 Geary Street this past Saturday where Charmaine Olivia debuted her latest works in Muses. With colorful portraiture Olivia takes a more painterly approach in this body of work as compared to last year’s Ritual, in which the artist explored themes of magic and earth energies, mythology, and religion. Check out the intriguing shots Macario captured opening night and be sure to stop by and see these beauties in person.
