Yamiko Kayukawa
This December, Yumiko Kayukawa comes to San Francisco for the first time and with her she brings beautiful candy colored pop paintings for a solo show at The Shooting Gallery. She will be exhibiting 18 brand new pieces for this much anticipated event. Yumiko’s work is of fashionable young women, animals, and traditional Japanese motifs done in a modern contemporary pop art style. Her work blends fashion Illustration, sharp iconic graphics, and meticulously rendered flora and fauna to create images that evoke a dreamy, erotic tone. The girls in Yumiko’s paintings are both beautiful and elusive, yet always engaging the viewer with direct eye contact with innocence in their eyes. Causing you to wonder if these girls are really all that innocent. The fantasy of these dream girls is mixed with nature… insects, birds, and cuddly animals. Real world problems crashing joyfully into these girls’ simple lives. Yumiko was born in Japan and still resides there but is influenced by “American pop culture and her exposure to rock n’ roll, film, and fashion. Yet the panoramic beauty of her home surroundings in Sapporo, Japan inspires Yumiko to incorporate her culture into her work as well, creating an incredible mixture of art and culture. Oh and did I mention that Yumiko’s shows usually have a waiting list and that they sell out before the night of the opening? Yumiko
