Seems to me no different from using a gun. If you fear for your life . shoot him and that does have some polltniatey negative consequences or groin strike and then break his neck or take his throat out before he finishes you off. Who in the world can say you struck a guy while he was incapacitated for half a second? Seems to me the potential negative consequences are infinitely less likely.
