Show and Tell: On Tender Hooks

Oh Isabel, how your bedtime stories do scare the children. Baby Bear shouldn’t bite Run DMC’s bling and Goldy Locks really should be wearing sunscreen in those woods. But what can we say- as long as they are happy. Isabel elaborates on her new book, On Tender Hooks, released May 9th at The Shooting Gallery.

The Big Picture: DRAW

If the thumping bass and speedy/slow rythm of the DRAW Show Walkabout didn’t tickle your fancy, this panorama offers another POV. With only one week left at The Shooting Gallery, there’s no time to waste: come see DRAW for yourself.

SF Expert Picks Shooting Gallery

We were ecstatic to be chosen in the SF Gate‘s article, “Native Son in Torrid Affair with S.F.,” as one of the most appreciated parts of town. In the ranks with Palace of the Legion of Honor and Aquarius Records, we were flattered by these words of David Katznelson:

“Justin Giarla and Andres Guerrero are my favorite art curators, presenting both first-time artists and some of the biggest names (shout-out to Mike Davis and Ausgang!). With their film ‘New Brow,’ they have further defined the cutting-edge, street-smart, no-pomp scene they have been celebrating for years. Their art openings are the biggest blasts, attracting an amazing cross-section of enthusiasts, and for a new collector there are always reasonably priced pieces that would look great on any wall.”

massive lines and crowds by you.

Unfortunately Andres Guerrero is no longer with the gallery, but we enjoyed the feedback on “New Brow.” David seems to be the go-to man for any “best of”: we also made it onto this 2024 list by David in Arthur. We appreciate the continued support!

"Kings of the City" Bombs NYC

http://urbanprankster.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/abrahamobama-500x375.jpg

The original breeding ground of graffiti culture, New York City, highlights the growth of this art form in “Kings of the City.” The film festival will take place this May at Maysles Cinema, presenting rare documentaries of graffiti culture’s birth and development from NYC to Europe. An accompanying Graffiti Art Gallery will support the non-profit, The Walls Belong to Us. Although the lineup looks very juicy, we are especially interested in the following film featuring Ron English:

Inside Outside
Dir. Andreas Johnson and Nis Boye Rasmussen
2005
57 min.
Inside Outside presents some key figures from the current graffiti inspired street art scene including Zevs from Paris, Swoon, KR and Earsnot from NYC, Ron English from Jersey City, Adam & Itso from Sweden and Denmark, and and Os Gemeos and Pigmeus from Sao Paulo.

Ron English Refigures Lilo & Stitch

Disney x MINDstyle Stitch Experiment 626 Project Artist Series Vinyl Figures

Ron English has combined forces with Disney and MINDstyle to design two snuggly, skeletal vinyls of Stitch. Ron isn’t one to let us down, and this is no exception: we’re diggin the fierce grill and lovable carcass of his two models. Other artists included in the Disney x  Mindstyle Stitch Experiment 626 Artist Series are Buff Monster, kaNO, Peekaboo Monster and Angry Woebots. Each vinyl toy is 5″ tall and is limited to 500 pieces, hitting stores this summer.

Strange Grooming Habits: Travis Louie

Since he was twelve years old, Travis Louie has known he would be an artist. His mutated Victorian hybrids are strikingly realistic and yet their deformities invoke nausea; a combination that keeps your eyes locked on his images. Sit tight for his newest show, “Strange Grooming Habits,” opening May 9th  at Copro Nason Gallery.

NPR Asks, Public Art or Nuisance?

This morning on NPR, a fierce debate concerning graffiti went down. Feathers got ruffled and a web forum gave listeners a chance to voice their opinion on the controversial matter. Although some hateful responses were tinged with ignorance, others were worthy of high-fives. Below are two excerpts that we support. For the full thread, see KQED Community.

“Public art itself can carry a powerful message, and can be a beautiful expression of the defiant and rebellious spirit that has shaped this country for so long. Unfortunately, like so many forms of expression, cheap mimicry has given it a bad name.” -Jollymore

“Humans have been leaving their marks on the walls for over 30,000 years! Graffiti can be found in caves, in pyramids, in the ruins of Pompeii, and from settler scrawls by Native markings in Utah.”-Anonymous

DRAW Show Walkabout

The days are speeding by and DRAW Show‘s stopover at The Shooting Gallery draws near to closing. It seems as though new drawings are being added to the wall every day; every time we walk through the gallery, fresh images emerge from the mass and grab our attention. We did a quick walkabout of the space to give you an idea of the incredible scope of this show. Enjoy.
