A World of It's Own

Toronto’s landscape just got a little more freaky with the addition of Kris Kuksi’s joint show with Andrew Jones: “Divine Invasion.” Daily duJour got some great close-ups of Kris’ maniacally detailed sculptures, pictured below: Read more »

The Morning After: 666 Opening

Ok, so it’s not exactly the morning after… but “the week after” just doesn’t have the same ring. The grand opening of 666 Gallery last Thursday was a huge success, and we were excited to receive this diary entry from the curator herself. Here are a few words from Jillian Mackintosh:

“Like most wonderful things in life, 666 Gallery came at the most unexpected time and seemed to just fall into place. Read more »

On the Lookout for Hugh Leeman

100_0847_5

Look familiar? Separation Wall Bethlehem Palestine was part of Gallery Three‘s May 2024 exhibition by Hugh Leeman. Although we sold out of this print, we just got word from Hugh that there are yet a few reserves. The black and white digital photo is 16″ x 20″, signed and numbered in an teeny edition of 5. Look out for Hugh at White Walls Gallery this November.

Feliz Dia de las Madres

Between running Fuse Gallery and Lit Lounge in NYC, Erik Foss also finds time to mount his own fine art shows. Now that the curator of “Draw Show” has wrapped up things at The Shooting Gallery, his full attention is on November’s exhibition at Gallery Three. The man who brought us Homeless America last November -a monstrous American flag comprised of homeless signs- is sure to ruffle feathers again. Our internet stalking unearthed these promising images of Erik’s new works, and there’s plenty more to come.

Scarlet Takes Manhattan

Flavorwire just released a nice write-up on miss Molly Crabapple of Dr. Sketchy’s and “Draw Show” in anticipation of her new book, Scarlet Takes Manhattan:

“With her retro-chic drawings of fan dancers and pasties-swirling dance molls, artist Molly Crabapple is the Toulouse-Lautrec of New York’s burlesque scene; the pint-sized powerhouse of energy has livened up the pages of the New York Times, Playgirl and Marvel Comics . . . Her illustrative talents come with a charming modicum of sass, humor, sex appeal, and nostalgia, but she’s perhaps best known for creating Dr. Sketchy’s Anti Art School, which she began in frustration after having posed for “one too many sterile life-drawing sessions.’” -Spyridon P. Panousopoulos

Family Tree

Art and music are like peas and carrots, so it’s no surprise that the folky Paul Chatem plays upright bass in a mountainbilly duo. Inspired by Tom Waits, Billie Holiday, Johnny Cash, and Howlin’ Wolf to name a few, Avery James and the Hillandales provides a soundtrack to Paul’s old timey imagery. Check out this “Family Tree” video to see what we mean.

NBC Gets Bagged

NBC Bay Area had a troublesome run-in with Dustin Olson‘s bags at the opening for “Fantastic in the Sack” last Saturday:

DustinOlsonBags

“According to this guy who claimed to be the artist (whom I believed solely on the basis of his superior bag design), he was being f-ed with by this band of bagged men and their documentarian for what seemed to be flattery, criticism, opportunism, or a mixture of the three.

Olson asked me to try to get to the bottom of it since none of the bags would talk to him.” -Josh Keppel, NBC Bay Area Read more »

Shawn Barber Talks Miserable Americans

It seems that American culture is more interested in the lives of celebrities than dealing with their own miserable lives at home . . . The economy is spiralling negatively, out of control, and professional athletes are still making millions and millions more than they did last year. It’s disgusting how the majority of Americans feed into it, pay for it, and then complain about how shitty their lives are. It really is disgusting and sad. There is no accountability and no one wants to take responsibility for their own actions. -Shawn Barber, Format Magazine Interview

MDA Around the Bay

Today the postman delivered the Spring 2024 newsletter from Muscular Dystrophy Association, an organization that The Shooting Gallery has supported for several years. We were happy to read that the Fourth Annual Bash for Augie’s Quest raised over 600k, thanks to the help of Sara Bareilles and Access Hollywood’s Nancy O’Dell. MDA hosts a full calendar of Bay Area events yearround, including the Outback Gold Tournament, Franchise Owners of America Golf Tournament, and Stars of San Francisco at The Fairmont Hotel. Check ou the MDA site for ways to get involved or donate.
