Aaron Nagel‘s new work was mentioned last week in Beautiful Decay, accompanied with some gorgeous photos! It’s hard to comprehend that Nagel is self-trained when you look at how flawless and complete his demonstration of figurative realism is. Nagel’s recent paintings display his mastery of perfectly capturing the interplay of light and shadow, while incorporating religious imagery to create a stunning visual intensity.

‘hard to comprehend’? not really. take photo, enlarge using grid or projector, draw image from grid or trace projection onto canvas, then add color. i want to love the work, but it’s so obviously traced and/or gridded that there is no interpretation, only photo copying. other folks don’t seem to mind though.
