Installation Week!

We love installation week! Paul Chatem brought his work for Island of the Colorblind in yesterday, and lets just say, the photos do not do these works justice.

If you haven’t seen Paul’s work before, we highly suggest you do. He is able to draw out the inner curiosity in those of all ages . The moment you see his hand made kinetic pieces, it’s hard to not stop and take a deeper look. Move a few steps closer and you realize just how flawlessly his vision has been executed. Rusted pennies and keys keep screws in place, old knobs become a new way to bring his pieces to life as they serve to operate his wooden gears.

And, can we just talk for a minute about how Paul is colorblind?! Inspired by the writings of neurologist Oliver Saks, Chatem explores his limitations as a colorblind artist by pushing the spectrum of his paints beyond what is visible to his eyes. This bit of information pushes these works into the category of spectacular. Red and green dots, to him blend together, but for us they create carefully crafted letters and numbers.

Island of The Colorblind opens in conjunction with New Works by ROA at White Walls this Saturday, April 9th from 7-11pm. Don’t worry, if you cant make it that evening…their work will be up all month.
