Preview Pedro Matos’ New Work for “Ephemera”

Pedro Matos‘ combines the supple nature of oil paint with layers of texture in a new way. These built up and deconstructured layers create the appearance of the wear and tear of wheatpastes plastered around cities, thus capturing the aesthetic of impermanent visuals in a more permanent way. The title of Matos’ solo show speaks exactly to that, “Ephemera” being defined as ” 1. Things that exist or are used or enjoyed for only a short time. 2. Items of collectible memorabilia, typically written or printed ones, that were originally expected to have only short-term usefulness or popularity.” Through his work Matos captures the passage of time, freezing it’s effects in one frame, preserving that moment for us to view. By referring to items that are intentionally crafted to be impermanent Matos’ makes us reflect on the process of continual change we are all involved in. Culturally, economically, politically, personally; we are a world in flux. And it is nice to take a moment of stillness and just look at the faces around us rather than rushing by.
