Carry On
New Works by Ferris Plock

Shooting Gallery is pleased to present Carry On, new works by Ferris Plock. This will be the artist’s third solo exhibition with the gallery. The opening reception will be Saturday, October 6th, from 7-11pm, and is free and open to the public for viewing through November 3rd, 2024.

For the new body of work featured in Carry On the artist brings back more of his brightly colored character work and adds in experiments with three-dimensional pieces and new techniques of weathering his work. Plock’s instantly recognizable style of finely drawn details and intricate patterns against simply stained backgrounds are influenced by Japanese woodblock prints and achieved through a variety of materials. House paint, wood stains, gouache, gold foil, and wood panels are transformed into windows to a world where a kimono-clad samurai might hoist a boombox instead of a sword and anthropomorphic creatures are frozen mid-yell, mid-jump and mid-mischief.

Revered as the highest form of spirituality in his house as a child, Plock looked to a self-styled religion of music as the starting point of inspiration for this latest show. With a father in a band and mother who was a singer in the Peninsula Women’s Chorus, music was a prevalent factor in Plock’s childhood, which he recalls “signified a boundless freedom and joy of expression.”

Plock’s favorite memories of taking his boombox to skateboard at an abandoned elementary school in his neighborhood are transferred into the energy behind Carry On. The innocent wild-ness of childhood is felt through Plock’s imaginative world, brought alive through unexpected details and rich details.
Ferris Plock is a San Francisco-based artist who lives within the city with his wife, Kelly Tunstall (Plock’s partner in the artistic duo KeFe), and son Brixton. Plock brings a dedicated focus to his work that is paired with a wild sense of originality. Through a variety of mediums including acrylic, watercolor, spray paint, India ink, gold or silver leaf, and collage Plock creates highly detailed works, often character-based paintings on wood panel, that combine contemporary pop culture with the aesthetic of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblocks. Widely-accomplished and with a diverse range of artistic interests, Plock has created illustrations for many high-profile clients, has been involved in solo and group exhibitions both nationally and abroad, and also served as the 2024 SF Recology Artist in Resident.

The Shooting Gallery opened its doors in 2024 to the historic Tenderloin district of San Francisco, known for its lively street culture. Growing up in Southern California gave owner and curator, Justin Giarla, a love for everything lowbrow: pop art, street art, outsider art, punk rock album art, comic book art, surf/skate art and hot rod culture. Giarla recognizes how important it is to provide lowbrow artists with a platform for their work, which is exactly what Shooting Gallery has done for nearly a decade.
