Shooting Gallery Exclusive: Reference Photos for “Empty Room” by Adam Caldwell

_DSC7356

Adam Caldwell just forwarded us some stunning photos that were used to render images for the oil paintings in his current show, Empty Room.  The photo shoot was a collaboration between Caldwell and photographer Shaun Roberts, with Caldwell directing the models in emotional gestures that juxtapose beautifully against the structural complexity of the works. The photos lend themselves as evidence of Caldwell’s incredible mastery of photorealism, but are also in themselves powerful works of art.  If you have yet to stop by Shooting Gallery for Empty Room, make sure to check it out before it closes on December 8.

“No Half Measure’s in Artist’s Look at Duality” (WeHeart Magazine)

“In this series of 10 oil-paintings, we see a world in trouble. Here, the factories are not productive or progressive, but belching, the plastic not useful, but suffocating, the tires not driving society forward but piled in polluting heaps.”

Art & Lifestyle magazine WeHeart recently reviewed Adam Caldwell‘s current show Empty Room.  Executive Editor Rob Wilkes is equally enthused about Caldwell’s photorealistic and surrealistic aesthetics as he is about the subject matter that simultaneously focuses on the concept of separate body and mind, as described by Descartes’ philosophy of Dualism; and the effects and defects that technology has imposed on the modern world. View the full feature here.

Empty Room will be on view at Shooting Gallery until December 8.

Adam Caldwell Studio Visit (Live Fast Mag)

Live Fast Magazine‘s Abby Wilcox recently had the opportunity to step inside the studio of artist Adam Caldwell and chat about his ideas on Philosophy, culture, and our identities within society. His current show “Empty Room” at Shooting Gallery focuses around all of these concepts, and is in large part a discussion of Cartesian Dualism and it’s effects on the modern world.

“Basically, Descartes famously defended the idea of dualism, which examines the idea (particularly prevalent in Western culture) that the mind and the body are separate entities. In Caldwell’s paintings, you see colliding pieces of history, broken and abandoned buildings, isolated figures and destruction of the environment that depict a fragmented world.” -Wilcox

She captured some great photos (our favorite being the light up Jesus .gif) and recorded her interview with Caldwell.  Make sure to catch “Empty Room” before it closes on December 8th, and listen to the podcast here.

Shooting Gallery Exclusive: Interview with Adam Caldwell

Adam Caldwell‘s Empty Room opened over the weekend, and in the haste of last minute preparations we didn’t have a chance to publish our interview with him until now. The artist paints a collage-style arrangement of disparate imagery that utilizes multiple perspectives, points of reference, and dimensional interplay. In this interview, Caldwell discusses his application of academic techniques, which include traditional European landscape methods and linear perspective. This latest body of work addresses the longstanding western discourse on the divide between body and mind. The show will run through December, 8.

firstt

Adam Caldwell recently opened his show Empty Room at the Shooting Gallery this past Saturday. The artist is known for his vertiginous compositions, which simultaneously expand and contract space. Drawing from a range of techniques, from classical figuration to abstract expressionism, the painter carefully explores the Cartesian duality of mind and body highlighted in the philosophical treatise De Prima Philosophia. Empty Room with run through December, 8.

Interview with Adam Caldwell (1xRun)

1xRun_Adam_Caldwell_both

On Thursday, 1xRun launched two prints (“Unity of Mind” and “Theory of Form“) from Adam Caldwell which are only available until November 15th. 1xRun also featured a great interview with the artist on his ideas of the fallacy of Cartesian duality, and its resulting harm, that have been informing his art throughout the year. The culmination of these ideas can be seen in Adam’s solo show Empty Room, opening tonight at Shooting Gallery, from 7-11pm, and which will contain a new limited edition print, “Archery,” available through the Shooting Gallery.

Hi-Fructose’s correspondent Nastia Voynovskaya recently posted this article about Adam Caldwell‘s latest body of work. His exhibition, Empty Room, opens on November 10, and will show through December 8 at the Shooting Gallery.  The show will include these new large scale oil paintings that “take historical and philosophical ideas, and play them out in a cacophony of bodies, explosions, and lab experiments.” The artist explores the Western dichotomy between body and mind, purportedly rooted in the wake of Cartesian philosophy.
