"Winter Group Show" 2024 at Shooting Gallery

Shooting Gallery‘s Winter Group Show debuted just a couple weeks ago with a wonderful turnout which included many of the artists featured in the lineup. Rachel Ralph of Fecal Face paid an early visit to the opening reception, here is a bit of what she had to say about the show: “The artists showing are those that have helped with the continued development of the Shooting Gallery, including John Felix Arnold III, Ferris Plock, and APEX, all of whom have shown work recently in the Tenderloin. The intermingling of two-dimensional and sculptural works emphasized the variety of artists who show at the Shooting Gallery, which is a great way to finish their last show in this space.” Read her full review and check out additional photos here.

Shooting Gallery Grand Opening: Charmaine Olivia’s Muses

Shooting Gallery Presents:

Muses

A Solo Show by Charmaine Olivia

sidebyside - Copy

The Shooting Gallery is pleased to present Muses. The opening reception for Muses will be held at The Shooting Gallery on Saturday, February 9th, 2024 from 7-11pm. The exhibit will be on display through March 2nd, 2024 and is free and open to the public.

SF-based Charmaine Olivia has built a reputation that spreads far beyond her local following by casting her creative eye to a variety of mediums including illustration and photography, but it is through her oil paintings that Charmaine’s remarkable talent is best conveyed. A focus on feminine beauty underlies the majority of the artists’ works, as well as developing an ethereal presence with subtle inclusion of the unexpected. Each painting in the exhibition is a wonderland of hidden details. Wildly colorful, Muses is a more passionate exploration of portraiture than previous shows, full of palettes that impart a new vibrancy to the work.

With this new body of work, Charmaine has taken a more painterly approach. The loose brush strokes and rough handling of paint compliment the sense of a certain wild freedom that echoes out from each of the artist’s powerful figures. “Each painting was inspired by an image of a woman with a certain look, a soft quality or expression that drew me to her,” Charmaine explained. “Some emotion that resonated within me that I wanted to reflect back.”

The Mission based artist is a standout in the San Francisco art community, and with a fan base that already covers the globe, it is clear that her work is popular amongst the masses. The 24 year old self-taught artist has already created a body of imagery that has caught the eye of Lady Gaga, Urban Outfitters, and Volcom… and she shows no signs of slowing down. Her females are meticulously rendered, juxtaposed with just enough looseness in her paint to add increased interest. Olivia’s work seems to evolve right before us, with each body of work incorporating new techniques and subject matter.”

The Shooting Gallery opened its doors in 2024 to the historic Tenderloin district of San Francisco; known for its lively street culture. Growing up in Southern California gave owner and curator, Justin Giarla, a love for everything lowbrow: pop art, street art, outsider art, punk rock album art, comic book art, surf/skate art and hot rod culture. Giarla recognizes how important it is to provide lowbrow artists with a platform for their work, which is exactly what Shooting Gallery has done for nearly a decade.

SG Project Space Grand Opening: Sickboy’s Mello Diorama

Shooting Gallery Project Space Presents:

Mello Diorama,

A Solo Exhibition by Sickboy

Sickboy Front

Shooting Gallery Project Space is pleased to present Mello Diorama from UK-artist Sickboy. The exhibition will feature four original paintings, framed sketches, and a special unique multiple edition on paper made specifically for the show, with hand-painted fills (unique multiples), edition of 10. The opening reception will be Saturday, February 9th, from 7-11 pm, and the exhibition is free and open to the public for viewing through March 2nd, 2024.

With 2024’s Wonder Club, the artists’ first major US solo show, Sickboy gave San Francisco a look inside an elaborate dream world. Mello Diorama aims to evoke a similar lucid dream experience with influences drawn from the legacy of San Francisco’s underground comic scene. An animated diorama created with elements taken from Sickboy’s paintings will fill most of the space, giving viewers a surreal look at the cycle of life and death.

A leading artist to emerge from Bristol’s infamous graffiti scene, Sickboy’s humorous work has cemented his place in the upper echelons of the British street art movement. He is one of the first UK artists to use a logo in place of a tag, and his red and yellow street logo known as “The Temple” can be seen on walls and wheelie bins worldwide. Sickboy has built up one of the largest bodies of street art works in UK history. His work hit the big screen recently in Banksy’s Oscar-nominated film, Exit Through the Gift Shop, His temples, slogans and audacious stunts – including the caged heart installation dropped outside the Tate Modern in 2024 – have landed him global recognition.

The Shooting Gallery Winter Group Show opened last weekend with an incredible turnout, with artists and art lovers alike completely filling the space to say good bye to our current location and hello to our future gallery space! The show’s lineup included artists that have been an integral part of the Shooting Gallery, White Walls, and 941 Geary family as well as the San Francisco art community. Hi Fructose’s Nastia Voynovskaya came by to celebrate and snapped some great photos of John Felix Arnold III, Lauren Napolitano, C3, and Chad Hasegawa, to name a few. February 2nd will not only be the last day to see the Group Show, but it will also be one of the last times we open our doors at 839 Larkin (before moving to the bigger & better space at 886 Geary Street). So make sure to come by and check out the amazing collection, and say goodbye to the original Shooting Gallery and White Walls!  Read Nastia’s article with the rest of her shots here, and catch more photos after the jump! Spencer Keeton Cunningham in Vancouver

image

Our very own Spencer Keeton Cunningham was in Canada last year (last week) to participate in the Idle No More gathering in Vancouver, BC. While there he whipped up a radical mural between dusk and dawn, and captured it on camera along with some other happenings of his stay. Spencer will be showing some work at next month’s Winter Group Show at Shooting Gallery, the last show to take place at the 839 Larkin Street space before our big move. Make sure to RSVP to the show on Facebook!

Art Business’ Review on Zaya

12151252

Happy New Year! We here at Shooting Gallery hope you all had a safe and welcoming start for the new 2024 year!

Before we headed off for the holidays, Ann Ross from Art Business paid a visit to the gallery and shared with us her thoughts on our current show, Steppe Warriors, with Zaya. The Mongolian artist’s pieces were rich with stories that were inspired by the era of Genghis Khan and his fine attention to detail is hard to miss while gazing at his artwork.
